Kindness loves the days when we are just your favorite coffee shop. Like other locally owned cafes, we take great pride in serving high quality drinks (Thanks, Grit Coffee Co) and delicious baked goods (Thanks, Found Market and Innisfree Village). We also sell high-quality merch. Cute onesie, right? We like being a space where people meet friends, grab caffeine before heading to their next thing, or open up a laptop and stay for a while. However, there are some days when Kindness feels unique, when a few of us get chills and my eyes start to tear up. Wait. Who? Me?
We had one of those days recently when Baby Olivia came to visit. We’ve known this particular family as customers and Y members for over a year. They believed in our mission and our work all along. But when they received a prenatal diagnosis indicating that their newborn daughter would likely be born with Down syndrome, Kindness Cafe began to mean just a little bit more. It’s a place of belonging. It’s a place where Baby Olivia is celebrated and adored. It’s a place where people with and without disabilities can find connection and community. Thanks for visiting us, Olivia. You sure are beautiful and we can’t wait to see what gifts you bring to this world.
